STARTING YOUR JOURNEY

Hybrid Publishing

Author-Centric Decision-Making
When working with traditional publishers, authors often surrender control over their stories. Pumpkin Vines prioritizes your vision. Collaborate with us, and we'll ensure your book is written and presented exactly as you envision it. Enjoy the final say in how your story is crafted and communicated to the audience.

Ideal for First-Time Authors
Breaking into big-name publishers is challenging for first-time authors. Pumpkin Vines welcomes new voices, providing opportunities for authors without extensive backgrounds or experience. Our focus is on the merit of your book idea, fostering an environment where your unique story finds a home.

Retain Ownership and Control
Traditional publishing often means signing away rights to your book and relinquishing control over its creative and promotional aspects. Pumpkin Vines offers a different approach – hybrid publishing. With us, you retain ownership of your book, maintaining greater control over both the creative process and promotional strategies.

Hybrid Publishing with Pumpkin Vines

At Pumpkin Vines, we understand that every author's journey is unique. That's why we offer a hybrid publishing option, blending the best of traditional and self-publishing models to cater to your individual needs.

How Hybrid Publishing Works
1. Submission and Evaluation
The process begins with the submission of sample pages or the entire manuscript. Our team evaluates the content to determine its suitability for publication. Not all submissions are accepted, aligning with industry standards. Some manuscripts may be accepted on a contingency basis, with the option for additional developmental and/or copyediting.

2. Package Options
Upon acceptance, authors are presented with a range of package options tailored to their requirements. Packages cover essential services like design, production, and distribution, with the flexibility to choose enhanced services such as developmental editing, marketing materials, or media outreach. Authors can opt for a pre-designed package or create a custom plan according to their needs.

3. Transparent Pricing
At Pumpkin Vines, we prioritize transparency in pricing. Authors receive clear information about the costs associated with their chosen package. It's essential to note that, like any publishing endeavor, there may be additional costs for tasks such as advance reader copies, shipping, storage, and permissions. We ensure authors are aware of these potential expenses upfront to avoid unwelcome surprises.

4. Additional Costs Awareness
We recognize that authors may not be familiar with all the nuances of the publishing process. To address this, we provide clear communication about potential additional costs before the book reaches readers' hands. Whether it's obtaining an ISBN or hiring a proofreader, we guide authors through these aspects to enhance their understanding and experience.

Share Your Story: Craft a compelling narrative that shares your journey, passion, and the unique aspects of your book. Make it relatable and personal, allowing potential backers to connect emotionally with your project.
Know Your Audience: Understand the audience you're trying to communicate with. Tailor your campaign to resonate with them, addressing their interests and values.

Do you have an idea?

Co-write a book with Katherine.
Although there are a range of ways to structure a co-written book here are a few a starting points to consider.

Once the book is ready for production (based on the structure that was chosen initially) it can be published in one of the following ways:
- You work with a publishing company and pay contracted rates.
- Self Publish under your Kindle Direct Publishing / B&N Press (or similar) with you paying contracted rates plus legal fees.
- Self Publish under my Kindle Direct Publishing / B&N Press (or similar) with me paying royalties to you and no upfront costs to you except legal fees.

Promotion of a new book is a huge undertaking. Please be sure that your are ready to get your face and our story out there. This means that you will need to commit to scheduling and attending book signings and promotional events.

Sign a Collaboration Agreement

Step 1 is a legal Collaboration Agreement.  This protects your idea and my writing.  Once the agreement is finalized we will have a few conversations about the story concept.  You will share relevant documents and photographs.

Get Writing & Illustrating

I then take our notes and collaborative work and write a children's story.  You will then be required to sign a non-disclosure before the first draft and initial concept illustrations are shared.
Once the story and illustration concepts are approved I will complete all of the illustrations, typeset, have it edited, and get the book ready for production.

Production & Promotion

Once the story and illustration concepts are approved I will complete all of the illustrations, typeset, have it edited, and get the book ready for production. Once the book is ready for production the most important piece is promotion.  As a co-author you will need to be ready to get the book noticed. When promoting a book you must be willing to have 10-50 copies of the book on hand (depending on the size of the event) These books can be purchased at cost when working with KDS or B&N.  When working with a publishing company you usually will need to purchase a set number of copies and pay for them upfront based on the run requirements.
